The challenge

Parents want to get this right. They are getting mixed messages from every direction.

Social media, sport culture, AI chatbots and well meaning relatives all have an opinion on what teenagers should eat. At every school we visit, parents tell us the same thing: "I don't know what to believe, and I'm scared of saying the wrong thing."

1 in 3

students skip breakfast at least occasionally, and around 1 in 10 regularly go to school without it.

62%

of young Australians say social media has a negative effect on how they feel about their bodies.

1 in 2

young people say body image concerns have stopped them going to school at some point.

Why parents matter most

What happens at home makes the biggest difference

Large studies of families with teenagers show that how parents talk about food matters as much as what is on the plate. None of it needs perfect meals. It needs parents who feel confident.

  • Conversations about body size are linked to more disordered eating behaviours
  • Conversations about energy, eating patterns and how food helps you feel and perform are linked to fewer
  • Regular shared family meals are one of the most consistent protective factors

What parents are hearing
TikTok: "Take this to bulk up"
The coach: "Get on the pre-workout before training"
An AI chatbot: a meal plan no dietitian has looked at
Their teen: "Everyone's cutting out carbs"
The parent: "Is this normal? Am I saying the wrong thing?"
Our approach

One message. Three places it needs to land.

A session with students only goes so far if they hear something different at the dinner table. That is why Fuel Your Potential brings students, staff and parents into the same conversation.

01

Students

Year level workshops on energy, focus, sport and cutting through online noise.

02

Teachers

Staff training so food and body talk is safe and consistent across the school.

03

Parents

This session. The same evidence and language, so it carries on at home.

What families walk away with

Practical, evidence based and free of guilt

No food rules, no meal plans and no shame. Just the things that make the biggest long term difference, explained by dietitians who do this every day.

01

What growing kids actually need

Energy, growth and brain development through childhood and adolescence, and why regular meals matter more than perfect ones.

02

The language that helps

Simple swaps that move away from good and bad food talk and keep comments off bodies, without walking on eggshells.

03

Cutting through the noise

Supplements, protein powders, food trends and influencer advice. What is worth knowing and what to ignore.

04

What to do if you're worried

The early signs worth noticing, how to start a calm conversation and where to go for support. Early help makes a real difference.

05

The habits with the strongest evidence

Shared meals, role modelling and trusting kids to listen to hunger and fullness. The handful of things that matter most.

06

Systems for busy weeks

Breakfast that actually happens, lunchboxes, after school sport and study snacks that keep energy steady.

A taste of the session

Small shifts in language. Big shifts at the table.

Most parents already know what to put on the plate. What they want is the words. Here are three of the swaps we cover.

"That's junk, it's bad for you."
"Let's have that with something that'll keep you full for training."
"Haven't you had enough?"
"There's more if you're still hungry."
"I've been so bad today."
Say nothing. Kids copy how we talk about our own eating.

What parents say
She’d started saying certain foods were ‘bad’ because of something she’d seen on TikTok. The session gave me the words to talk about it without turning it into an argument. She actually listened.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Can we book a parent session on its own?

Yes. Many schools start with a parent session, and plenty pair it with student workshops through Fuel Your Potential so families and students hear the same message in the same term.

Webinar or in person: which is better?

Both work well. Live webinars make it easy for working parents and regional families to join from home, and come with a recording. In person seminars suit schools with a strong parent evening culture or a student program running the same day. We are happy to help you choose.

Is it suitable for families with a child who has eating concerns?

Yes. All content is eating disorder informed. We never discuss weight, calories or restriction, and we cover how to respond if you are worried and where to find support. If your community has particular sensitivities, we are happy to talk them through before the session.

What if parents can't make it?

For webinars, schools receive a recording to share with families. Every school also receives a take home parent guide after the session.

Can we run one session for both primary and secondary parents?

We recommend separate sessions because the questions are so different, but for K–12 schools we can run a combined session with a tailored split.

Do you travel outside Sydney?

Yes. Webinars run anywhere in Australia, and we deliver in person seminars across the country by arrangement.

How much does it cost?

It depends on format and whether it is part of a wider program. Fill in the form and we will send a tailored proposal within one business day.
