Longer days filled with sunshine, fresh seafood, summer fruits, and hopefully a few days off work—what’s not to love about the festive season? However, a change in routine and an uptick in social gatherings can sometimes disrupt your balanced eating habits. We know that resisting the temptation to indulge can be especially challenging during this time. That’s why dietitians Anna and Alex from The Biting Truth are here with some smart strategies to help you stay on track.
Tune into Your Body: Boredom vs. Hunger
With a few extra days off work and more free time, it’s easy to find yourself reaching for snacks out of boredom rather than genuine hunger. To avoid mindless snacking, check in with your hunger cues before diving into the pantry. If it’s boredom rather than actual hunger, try engaging in an activity outside or taking a walk.
Snack Smart Before You Go Out
Arriving at a party starving can lead to overeating. To manage your cravings, have a small, nutritious snack before heading out (think yogurt, fruit, nuts, or veggie sticks with hummus). This will help curb your appetite and prevent you from overindulging at the event.
Mind Your Portions
Buffet tables can be tempting with their endless array of food, but it’s important to be mindful of portion sizes. Aim to fill your plate with a generous portion of vegetables, a lean protein source, and a small serving of low-GI carbohydrates. A helpful tip is to use a smaller plate to avoid piling on too much food. Use your hands as a guide:
- Veggies (non-starchy): About the size of two hands
- Carbohydrates (e.g., pasta, rice, bread): About the size of your fist
- Protein (e.g., meat, fish, eggs): About the size of your palm
Pause Before Going for Seconds
Give yourself 20 minutes before going back for a second helping. This allows your body time to signal fullness and helps reduce the likelihood of overeating. Staying away from the food table can also prevent mindless munching.
Drink Responsibly
While alcohol is a festive staple, it’s important to remember that it’s high in kilojoules and low in nutrients. Excessive drinking can lead to unwanted weight gain and may replace more nutritious options. To balance things out, drink a glass of water or soda water between alcoholic beverages. Be mindful of sugary pre-mixed drinks, which can pack as much sugar as a chocolate bar.
Above all, enjoy the season! The festive period is about celebrating with friends and family, so make the most of your time outdoors and stay active. Who knows—running around with loved ones might even earn you an extra glass of wine!
